Lost Dogs show in MD
July 5th and i'm still on vacation, and the Dogs are playing in Lanham, about an hour-fifteen from me. smiles!
i've seen the Lost Dogs countless times. i really do not remember how many times. Derri is the Dog that always recognizes me and he stops and says hi. i don't know if Terry recognizes me or not, but i've seen and talked to him a bunch of times too, even interviewed him for the Tollbooth once. i talk to Mike once in a while too, and he says to me "i've seen you before," but Derri is the one that pats me on the arm with recognition when he sees me. he did call me Tony this time too. i'm not sure if he just heard me tell someone my name or he actually did remember it..... but it's kind cool to have a couple of your music heroes talk to you like that before a show....
they were at a church in Lanham. not a big church, but nice. nice chairs, clean walls with banners, ample sound system. i sit in the front row center on Derri's side of the aisle. smiles!
there's an opening band though. the Dogs are my favorite live band and opening bands for the Lost Dogs are just a big waste of my time, i think. lets get on to the good stuff.... but i actually ended up liking these guys. they play with a computer loop program as they do their thing and it's pretty cool. they're called Station2, they're from Columbus Ohio.
after Station2 is over, the stage is cleared and set for the Dogs. i just saw them a week ago at Cornerstone and it was such a good show. Mike is first down the aisle as the guys come from the back of the auditorium. Derri and Steve follow and then Terry. they're wearing the same outfits they wore at Cornerstone a week ago. Derri in a pretty classic western shirt, Terry with a country music suit jacket over a Johnny Cash t-shirt, Steve with his big cowboy hat on and a t-shirt, and then Mike with his new R&R hall of fame "Dr. Love" shirt on. i'm glad to see the Mike really does like his shirt and is wearing it.
Dan bought him the shirt at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and had the name "Dr. Love" sewn on the right side pocket area. at this year's Cornerstone, Dan took contributors to the gift and we all signed a couple of cards to Mike, and then we presented the shirt to Mike on the Gallery Stage. fun. and he did like it.... and he's still wearing it. cool....
the show was fantastic. of course! the guys sound great, and play for about an hour and a half. nice. great songs, some laughs, and lots of smiles! then they say good bye and leave the stage as we clap and call for more. they're gone so long that i really start to think that they're not coming back for an encore when they finally do come back in the room and to the mics.... then Mike says he's tired, Terry agrees and says why don't they let someone else do the work. so Mike and Terry call for people to come up on stage to sing with the band. no one moves. Terry says he's serious and one girl goes up. they want more. they want to sing "Breathe Deep," and they want some people up there to help with the chorus. a couple more people go up. they're still not satisfied and call for more, "come on up here don't be shy." it's then that i stand up and move to the stage with one more guy. so now on stage are four Lost Dogs, and five fans, and we're going to sing "Breathe Deep." very cool. i stay on the side of the stage that i walked up on so i'm standing between Derri and Terry and i'm going to sing into Derri's mic with him. it was a blast. after that song they tell us not to move, we're going to sing another one and they go into "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." that one is even more fun because we know all the words to that one. big smiles!! after the song we all hug each other like we're all the band, Terry and Derri are happy and saying thank you to me, it's cool.... smiles....
after the show i stick around and get a picture with the guys. i also talk to Derri and Mike about the "Dr. Love" shirt, and i talk to Steve for a while about his new tattoo. he got one that i've been thinking about getting for years; he got the flying frog that i love on the under side of his right forearm. it was very nice. i told him that i have the frog too and that i had been thinking of getting that tattoo, he said i should come down to Nashville and get the exact same one from his same artist. i still want it, but i don't want the exact same one, and i wish i'd gotten if first!.... so it's fun hanging out for a while, but the nights over and i finally decide to get in the car and drive home.
smiles!
