it was Colorfest week end in my town of Thurmont. sorry but i forgot my camera so i don't have any pictures this year.... check out last years post, and it looked just about the same (but cloudier and cool) ... :-)
i drove up to Sarah's house and picked her up about 9 and we went to breakfast. then we hit the streets of Thurmont. as i drove into town there are lots of "parking lots," some of which are actual parking lots, some of which are lawns that people will let you use for a fee. the fee this year was 10 dollars. no way! i said. i live here, i'm not paying to park! so i drove on some side streets and pretty quickly found a parking space 1/2 block from Main St. ha.
Sarah and i walked around town for a few hours looking at all the vendor booths and tents. she was looking for fall decorations for her house, and she found a couple of things. she also got to see her mother there. she was there selling mirrors that she'd decorated. i didn't go up to her table, so i don't know what they really looked like.... but later we went back by that area and i was going to walk up, but she was gone. Sarah found out from someone else there that her mother was frustrated by the wind and that she hadn't sold any mirrors, so she packed up and left early. oh well.....
as ususal the town park and the streets were full of people. the food was good. i didn't buy anything. nothing really appeals to me there, plus i think the prices or what they have is too high. so i don't buy, i just window shop and walk around....
so Sarah got tired of looking at the vendors stuff and wanted to go to yard sales. Thurmont is full of yard sales too, on Colorfest week end. so we had lots to check out.... she picked up some more fall-ish decorations at the yard sales and then we headed back up the mountain to her place and Alex grilled some steaks for us. yum...... we were there for about 5 hours walking around, i'd say.... we ran into a couple people we knew. i saw a guy from work that drove out from Delaware with his wife. i got to catch up with Crystal Picazo, and Ruthann Shaw and Sherry. and i saw Steph and Mike from the old church. they have a pet grooming buisness and were set up with a vendor tent..... i think that's about all the folks i saw that i knew....
Sunday i went back up the mountain to get Sarah again and we went to church. and then lunch with Stefan and Judi. and then a ride on the motorcycle. we rode up to visit with Sean and Laura and the kids.... i was not sure about taking the bike but Sarah wanted to. she thought that it'd be one of the last rides we'd get in before the cold weather hit to stay.... however, it was already pretty chilly on Sunday...... we went by the house and got the bike and suited up with coats and sweat shirts and my leather vest, etc... , but even before i got out of Thurmont, i said that this may not be a good idea. we should go back and get the car.... Sarah wanted to ride up and said so... i said ok, we'd give it a shot. hopefully we wouldn't freeze.... so we hit the road... it was pretty cold on the bike, but not too bad. we got to Hershey and got to see the kids, hold Vencenzo for a bit (he's getting big), and visit, but we didn't stay long. i wanted to get back home before the sun went down because i knew it'd be really cold if we were out in the dark. so the ride home started out ok, but we didn't beat the sun. it went down behind the hills and trees and we were cold.... we laughed about it when we finally got home. it was an experience... fun ride, but cold.... i should get myself a full leather outfit for riding in the colder weather one day.... but i don't usually do that....
so Sarah and i had a pretty active week end together. fun. :-)
fellowship and hanging out is what i'm all about. way before crafts and yard sales! :-)
here's more from the day:
it's Colorfest week end here in Thurmont. and the place is already hoppin'...
signs of Colorfest started earlier in the week, like Wednesday there were already trailers and tents up around town. now as of today the streets are abuzz with activity that will go non-stop until Sunday night when all the vendors, craft shops, and yard sales pack up and go home.
a lot of the locals dislike Colorfest and go away this week end. i like it. i don't really like yard sales or crafts, etc. but i like the activity and all the people that pour into town for a couple of days and then disappear.
i'll get some pictures tomorrow and Sunday and put some up here on Vox so you can enjoy Colorfest too. :-)
my week at work was fine. no overtime so i slept 8 hours every night this week... nice....
that's the good news, here's the bad news:
sigh...... one big time disappointment this week...
i had my motorcycle picked up by a shop in Glen Burnie. i decided to take it there to be repaired because the mechanic there has been working on this bike for many many years and came highly recommended by the former owner, Dave. so anyway, i called up the shop and had them come get the bike since i didn't think i should ride it with the noise it was making....
i talked to the mechanic a couple of days ago and he had the transmission apart and had replaced the ball bearings and seals and was going to put it back together and run another test or two and let me know if that fixed the problem. i was really hoping to get it back today because it's going to be a really nice week end and i wanted to ride it around town/Colorfest and on Monday i was thinking of taking a nice long ride somewhere since it's a holiday and i don't have to work....
but i spoke to the shop again today and after they put the transmission back together and took the motorcycle for a test ride they heard the noise i was complaining about. they hadn't heard it before but fixed the trans because it was leaking and i thought that was the problem.... well, once they found the noise, it was a rocker arm noise. not good. they'll have to take the engine out and the heads off to see what's happening with the rocker arms and the pistons, etc. they told me that the rocker arm is made out of brass [we saw rocker arms being made on a factory tour while i was in Milwaukee for Harley's 105th] and the only thing that would have made it fail like that is if i overheated the engine or let it get low on oil.
i don't remember riding it until it was that hot, and i don't think i was low on oil, but that could have happened....
i don't really know how it happened but i do know that my bike is not in good shape right now, and it's probably going to cost me a whole lot of money to get it back on the road..... sad, very sad.....
i guess i have to blame myself for not following up on the leak i had noticed. but i also kinda blame the last shop i took it to for not putting the trans back together right after just changing out the fluid. now the oil being low, i don't know what to think about that yet....
...bye bye over time money..... :-(
i had a really good week end here in Thurmont. Colorfest was good. actually, i enjoyed Colorfest more than usual. we parked cars again and it was good to just hang out with the guys and talk. the weather was great. clear, lovely days. so we had a big turn out both days, thousands and thousands of folks... i also got to catch up with Thom and Susan Mize briefly. Susan called me Saturday night and told me that Daniel, their son, and his band were going to be playing the next day in someone's back yard. the yard was open to a main pathway at the memorial park and lots of people would be passing by. i love to check out local bands anyway, but i especially wanted to see Daniel play because i've known him and his family since he was little. so i arrived at the appointed place at the appointed time and got to talk to Thom and Susan a little before the band started up. Thom is not only the proud father, he's also kind of the sound man/roadie, it seems. he was busy helping the kids set up and get the sound right... the kids in the band, including Daniel, are 9th graders, so 15 or so i guess. and they were fun. they must listen to a lot of classic rock because they did several tunes from my decade. AC/DC, Jimi, Stones, Lynard Skynard, and some originals that were still in that vein. Daniel plays a flying V through a Marshall, and he can really play! and it seems so natural to him. he just plays anything he feels like, it seems. that was cool.
i also got to hang out with Sean and the family all week end. that was really good!
we went out to eat several times and hung out at Colorfest some. i had a great time with them! :-)
the food booths are going up. there are white tents all over town. there's activity on every street, and we're getting ready for the big week end here in Thurmont.
it's beginning to look a lot like Colorfest around here!
Linda and i had a nice Colorfest week end. she got in late Friday night so we didn't park cars on Saturday. we got up about lunch time and went up to Cascade to GT's. we wanted to find the place because Sarah lives in Cascade now and told me that the food was good there and so did Sean. but there are no tables there! we got our food and ate in the car next to a small lake on the old army base up there. Sarah wasn't home so Linda didn't get to see her new apartment...
after lunch we came back to Thurmont to hit Colorfest. we walked around the carnival grounds and saw Kyle and Marlene there. then we headed over to the skate park to see some young local bands.
we stayed pretty much around the skate park most of the day actually. we saw a couple hard rock bands that were prettty good. then my church bass player's band set up. they do a fast punk kinda thing. pretty good. but i was really looking forward to seeing A Hero's Last Words, and Aneirin, two local Christian bands. but i noticed those bands and some of their friends showing up and standing around about the same time i found out that the place only had a permit to play music until 6pm, and it was after 5. so i went to the owner of the skate park and told him that the last two bands had to get on before he had to shut down, i wanted to see them! so he went out to the "stage," actually a single car garage with graffiti on the walls, and the door open, and shut down SOE, the band that was playing, so that the bands i wanted to see could set up. i helped out a little by hurrying SOE out and AHLW in. they were good. i guess kind of a rock, punk, emo thing. they did about 30 minutes and then let Aneirin take over. they set up as fast as they could and went into the set. it was approaching 6 but they decided that they'd just play until the owner came back and shut them down. he never did. they went until about 6:40 maybe. and they were really really good. i'm a fan. the two guitarists could play, the drummer was fantastic and entertaining, the bass player was pretty emo-skinny but was a beast on the bass. the singer was very energetic and entertaining. they rocked with touches of emo and hardcore. i'm planning on see both the bands again this week end in Frederick at "the Remnant," a local Christian venue (i think).
i was happy with the shows. and tired from the day. and hungry. we went to Simply Asian and ate. i've enjoyed every time i've eaten there. this was no exception. yummy. and thus ended a long but good Saturday!
